Linux Mint – it’s like coming home

I have switched to Linux Mint 11 Katya about a week ago and I’m completely satisfied. It’s really like coming home from the alien Unity. The interface is very usual and intuitive, no problems with Skype, screensavers etc. (See my post “Ubuntu 11.10 – First Problems“).

Linux Mint takes leadership on DistroWatch.com

Linux Mint distribution has become a “number one” in DistroWatch.com page hit rating. Ubuntu is now on the second position. The reasons for this are quite obvious.

Ubuntu 11.10 – First problems

I’ve installed the newest version of Ubuntu (11.10) about a week ago. There’re several small but annoying bugs found. I’ll try to search for possible solutions later. But now it’s just a list:

Reviving this blog

Hello Linux professionals!

I’ve found this abandoned project and decided to revive it. Some very old articles are restored from the original Linux Universe so if the authors don’t object to this it might help to start the things running.

Here I’m going to post news about Linux distributions and software, my own advises and howtos, publish links to any important Linux-related articles.

Welcome to Linux Universe!

ACS calls for government open source mandate

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) is calling for the federal government and the opposition to put in place policies that support open source software in an effort to boost the creation of local IT jobs in Australia and reduce what it estimates as a $14 billion ICT trade deficit.

Speaking at the ALP Conference ‘fringe event to debate the future of Australian IT industry’ in Sydney, ACS president Edward Mandla told CEOs from more than 30 IT vendors that if the government wanted to get serious about addressing the decline of ICT jobs it should mandate open systems.

Lotus looks to Linux in messaging wars

Lotus is hoping a solid dose of penguin power will help it remain competitive in the ongoing battle with Microsoft for the enterprise messaging market.

The IBM division announced a host of new product plans at its Lotusphere conference in Orlando last week and outlined future directions for its Lotus/Domino messaging platform.

While some of those changes are designed to align Lotus more closely with other IBM software divisions such as WebSphere, an even more predominant theme is the creation of a messaging platform which doesn’t rely on Windows as either client or server. Amongst those, Linux has emerged as the clear favourite.

In the second quarter, Lotus is scheduled to release version 1.1. of its Workplace software, which provides a client environment for users who don’t want the heavy footprint of a full Notes installation but need more flexibility than a browser-based client. The Workplace Client package can run existing Notes/Domino applications natively.

Lotus is betting its future on the notion that businesses will increasingly want to deploy messaging and collaboration applications on devices other than PCs. “This brings the 20-year-old PC programming model into the modern world of network computing,” said Lotus general manager Ambuj Goyal.

By bringing Lotus Notes onto Linux/J2EE, IBM can draw from the vast amount of engineering knowledge poured into WebSphere (now a product set, rather than just a J2EE container) and probably deliver a lower TCO and bigger bang-for-bucks since Java runs faster on Linux than in Windows on the same hardware base.

SCO Hit by Massive DoS Attack

The day of reckoning has arrived and it has spelled MyDoom for SCO’s web site. Sniff.

Oddly enough, the DoS from one of the most widespread virus outbreaks hasn’t completely crippled their site. I am still able to pull up some of the site (albeit very slowly). That casts more doubt on their previous claims that the “DoS attacks” launched by “people in the Linux community”. If you remember, these earlier alleged attacks totally flatlined their site. Hmm. Hmm hmm.

The SCO Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCOX – News), the owner of the UNIX® operating system and a leading provider of UNIX-based solutions, has confirmed that a large scale, Denial of Service attack has started that has made the company’s Web site, www.sco.com, completely unavailable. Internet traffic began building momentum on Saturday evening and by midnight Eastern Time the SCO Web site was flooded with requests beyond its capacity. The company expects these attacks to continue through Feb. 12.

“This large scale attack, caused by the Mydoom computer virus that is estimated to have infected hundreds of thousands of computers around the world, is now overwhelming the Internet with requests to www.sco.com,” said Jeff Carlon, worldwide director of Information Technology infrastructure, The SCO Group. “While we expect this attack to continue throughout the next few weeks, we have a series of contingency plans to deal with this problem and we will begin communicating those plans on Monday morning.”

I like that. An extra day means an extra press release! Heck, I bet they issue almost one PR per day over the course of this attack. Milk it SCObaby, milk it.
